What Are Buckyballs?
Buckyballs, better known as fullerenes, are spherical shapes made up of linked carbon atoms. Each carbon atom is bound to three other carbon atoms in hexagons and pentagons, similar to the patterns on a soccer ball.
Their full name is buckminsterfullerenes, named after the U.S. architect Buckminster Fuller, whose geodesic domes resemble buckyballs. The most common buckyball has 60 carbon atoms in its structure, also called C60.
How Do Buckyballs Help with Aging?
An incredible study from Fatmi Moussa in the journal Biomaterials in 2012 claimed that, after he gave rats a solution of olive oil and buckyballs, their life spans nearly doubled. This study went viral, and buckyballs were suddenly the new anti-aging solution.
Aging occurs on a cellular level when cells metabolize oxygen, becoming damaged as they do so. As cells metabolize oxygen, a necessary process in any mammal, they produce toxic byproducts that carry free radicals on their surfaces and batter any other cells, proteins, or DNA with which they collide.
Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals, which amounts to less cellular damage and decreased internal and external signs of aging. Buckyballs seem to reduce oxidative stress, making the rats in Moussa’s study outlive normal rats by almost double.
Final Thoughts
Although the results are not conclusive, and the study has some flawed aspects, it seems clear to scientists and laypeople that buckyballs can help ease the oxidative stress that causes outward signs of aging.
