3 Tips to Stay Healthy This Summer

Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine, and boost your health. But to stay healthy during the hotter months, you need to focus on remaining hydrated, protected from the sun, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

1.      Stay Hydrated

In summer, the heat causes you to sweat more to regulate your body temperature, causing you to lose water faster. If you don’t drink water throughout the day, you risk dehydrating, which can cause health complications like seizures, kidney damage, and heart failure.

Symptoms of dehydration include dizziness, nausea, poor concentration, increased heart rate and respiration, and thirst. Getting enough water is the best way to stay healthy in the intense summer heat.

On average, the body needs approximately half an ounce of water per pound of body weight. For example, a 150-lb. person needs to drink 75 ounces of water daily. If you exercise in the heat, add 12 ounces for every 30 minutes of activity.

If you struggle to drink enough water to stay adequately hydrated, try adding slices of citrus fruit or fresh mint to your water to make it more palatable. You can also add supplements like Vitality Hydrogen Tablets to hydrate your body on a cellular level and reduce inflammation.

2.      Use Sun Protection

UV rays can have short and long-term effects on the body, from premature aging to skin cancer. UV radiation levels peak during the summer months, so it is vital to wear sun protection whenever you are outdoors.

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or more at least 20 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two to three hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Wear a wide brim hat that shades your face and neck, and loose lightweight clothing with a tight-knit to cover your body.

3.      Exercise Early

Movement is critical for a healthy body. The CDC recommends at least 150 hours of mild to moderate activity per week. But exercising during the hottest part of the day, between noon and 4 p.m., can be detrimental to your health, potentially causing a heat injury like heat stroke.

To get your 30 minutes of activity every day while still enjoying the beautiful summer weather, try to exercise during the early morning or late afternoon. Get up early for a walk before work, go for a sunset hike on your favorite trail, or enjoy a twilight outdoor yoga session.
